Project Description:
English Ivy has consumed this treeThe Pringle Creek Watershed Council (PCWC) recently received a grant from the City of Salem’s Watershed Protection and Preservation Grant Program for their Invasive Weed Outreach Project. In this project, the council proposes to demonstrate the harm caused by invasive weeds and teach Salem gardeners, homeowners, and property owners how to identify and eradicate those weeds. They will focus on weeds that are widespread threats to urban watersheds, and those that are readily recognizable in the community.
Through the grant-funded project, they will be:
- publishing an informative visual guide to help people identify and manage weeds effectively
- producing bookmarks that show and describe the weeds and ways to control them
- placing signs in two Salem parks that show and describe the effects of invasive weeds
- giving 1/2-hour presentations about identifying and managing weeds to local area groups
The PCWC is hoping to distribute the publications and deliver the presentations to neighborhood associations, garden clubs, service clubs, schools, local nurseries and other businesses, and at local events. Their aim is to reach 10,000 people with their important message. Please contact PCWC if you or your group would like to host a presentation or help distribute brochures.

In addition to the publications and presentation, PCWC has put together an herbarium (plant samples that have been dried, pressed, labeled and laminated) of the focus weeds which will be available for people to view at the presentations. This was designed to help people identify individual weed species.
