How it works
This practice protects water quality by storing animal waste in a manner that protects it from precipitation events that could cause it to transport contaminates into ground or surface water. The waste can be composted or applied directly to fields at agronomic rates as a soil amendment. There are multiple options for this practice: to start with, simply cover waste during the wet period, on compacted soil away from water or sensitive areas and cover. A more permanent and usable design is to build an impervious concrete slab to store the waste, covering it with a tarp, or ideally to build a permanent covered structure on a concrete slab.
