SUMMARY:First Friday: Salem's Drinking Water - Source to Sink
DESCRIPTION:Please join Nenette Sequeira\, Water Education Instructor with the City of Salem\, for an engaging look at Salem’s drinking water system — past and present. This presentation will explore the history of Salem’s drinking water\, where our water originates\, how water becomes polluted\, and the treatment processes used to ensure clean\, safe water reaches homes and businesses throughout the community. \nFrom watershed to faucet\, attendees will gain a better understanding of the journey water takes before it reaches our taps and the important role water treatment and stewardship play in protecting this essential resource. \nSpeaker Bio:\nNenette Sequira has lived and taught in Salem since 1994. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and French\, along with a Master’s degree in Literacy Instruction\, and brings more than 20 years of experience teaching elementary and middle school students. She also spent two years in China teaching conversational English to post-graduate and college students. \nAlthough Nenette began college as a Marine Biology major\, she discovered her passion for education while teaching swimming lessons during high school and college. Water has always been her happy place\, and her current role as Water Education Instructor for the City of Salem brings together her lifelong love of education and water in a meaningful way. \nIf you have questions about this event\, need special accommodations to participate or are interested in being a future First Friday presenter\, please contact Amy Zimmer\, Communications and Outreach Specialist at amy.zimmer@marionswcd.net

SUMMARY:Riparian Restoration for Working Lands Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Marion Soil and Water Conservation District for a practical\, farmer-focused workshop exploring how streamside (riparian) restoration can work with your operation — not against it. This event is designed for farmers and landowners near streams who are interested in supporting the long-term productivity of their land while improving water quality and enhancing habitat. \nA guest speaker will share examples of what restoration can look like in an agricultural setting\, offering insights on balancing conservation with working lands. The event will take place from 9:00–10:00 AM\, and the venue will close at 11:00 AM. \n\nIf you have questions about this event\, need special accommodations to participate or are interested in riparian restoration for working lands\, please contact the event coordinators and district agricultural conservation planners\, Becky Pineda – Pasture and Livestock at becky.pineda@marionswcd.net \, 503-949-1518\, or Cesar Zamora – Soil and Croplands\, at cesar.zamora@marinoswcd.net\, 971-372-1341.

SUMMARY:Happy Earth Day 2026 Conservation Pledge
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Earth Day by taking action in your community! \nWhile we don’t have an event happening on Earth Day itself\, there are still plenty of ways to participate and make a difference. We encourage you to check out our Mid-Willamette Outreach Group cleanup events happening the Sunday before and the Saturday after Earth Day or explore additional opportunities near you using the global Earth Day map as great ways to get involved locally! \nAlso\, we recognize not everyone can make it out to an event—and that’s okay. Caring for our natural resources can happen anywhere\, starting right at home. This Earth Day\, we invite you to take part in a simple but meaningful way by making a personal conservation pledge\, open now through the end of April. \nTake the Conservation Pledge HERE\nEvery action—big or small—helps protect our soil\, water\, and natural spaces. However you choose to participate\, we encourage you to be part of a collective effort to care for the place we all call home. 🌎 \nThe mission of the Marion Soil and Water Conservation District is to partner with people in support of thriving lands\, clean water\, and healthy habitats. We do this through planning\, technical assistance and education.

SUMMARY:Great Raindrop Scavenger Hunt
DESCRIPTION:The Great Raindrop Scavenger Hunt is a self-guided scavenger hunt that will get you exploring local parks. Search for these raindrops featuring QR codes with fun water facts! At the end of the scavenger hunt\, you will find a prize! We will be celebrating World Water Day (March 22nd)\, with this year’s  theme “Water and gender equality: Where water flows\, equality grows.” This theme highlights the ways in which a lack of access to safe\, clean drinking reduces opportunities for women and girls\, who are often responsible for the time-consuming tasks of collecting and managing water. By drawing attention to the importance of safe\, clean drinking water and sanitation for all people\, we hope to spark inspiration for you to get involved locally to protect and improve water quality. \nYou can participate in the Great Raindrop Scavenger Hunt at Keizer Rapids Park or Bush’s Pasture Park (participate at one or both locations)! \nLook for the raindrop with a QR code to start the hunt — there’s no other signage\, so finding it is part of the fun! Need a hint? Here’s where to begin your search: \nKeizer Rapids Park: Check the parking lot side of the kiosk at the dog park parking lot. \nBush’s Pasture Park: Head to the far end of the Mission St. parking lot near the creek.

SUMMARY:Conservation Club: Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) Trapping Workshop
DESCRIPTION:We are having intermittent problems with our RSVP system.  If you can not RSVP with the the link above\, please contact amy.zimmer@marionswcd.net.  Thank you for your interest in conservation!\n\n\nEmerald Ash Borer (EAB)\, an invasive beetle that kills ash trees\, has been detected in Oregon and poses a serious threat to our native Oregon ash and the streamside habitat they support. Early detection is critical to slowing its spread and protecting these important ecosystems. \nJoin Marion Soil and Water Conservation District for a hands-on workshop focused on Emerald Ash Borer detection and community monitoring. Participants will receive a brief overview of EAB\, learn how to recognize signs of an EAB infestation\, and hear updates on local trapping efforts underway in Marion County. Attendees will practice setting an EAB trap and receive one to take home and install on their property\, helping expand our local monitoring network and support early detection of this invasive pest. \nThis workshop is especially intended for landowners and land managers with streamside areas\, natural areas\, or mixed woodlands that contain Oregon ash trees. If you steward property where ash trees are present\, your participation can play an important role in early detection and community preparedness. \nSpace is limited to 20 participants due to trap availability\, as each participant will receive a trap to install and monitor on their property. \nThis workshop is part of an Emerald ash borer (EAB) series aimed at preparing landowners for the anticipated impacts of the invasive EAB beetle on Oregon’s native ash trees. Please stay tuned to the Marion SWCD events page for upcoming emerald ash borer virtual presentations and in-person workshops designed to help landowners prepare their property. Upcoming topics include understory preparation\, invasive weed control\, native planting and propagation demonstrations\, and more. \nIf you have questions about this event or if you need special accommodations to participate\, please contact the event coordinators\, Chelsea Blank\, Natural Areas Conservation Planner\, Chelsea.Blank@marionswcd.net  or Sarah Hamilton\, Native and Invasive Plant Specialist at Sarah.Hamilton@marionswcd.net.
