SUMMARY:First Friday: Beavers in the Willamette Basin
DESCRIPTION:Beavers and their habitats provide numerous benefits for ecosystems and communities. They can also cause conflicts on working lands\, roadways\, and urban areas. Jean-Paul Zagarola will discuss how the Mid-Willamette Beaver Partnership is developing tools to restore beneficial beaver habitat and resources for people in the region to better co-exist with beavers while mitigating their negative impacts. \nJean-Paul A. Zagarola – Senior Program Manager for the Bonneville Environmental Foundation\, Jean-Paul has been supporting conservation and restoration efforts in Oregon since 2012. Jean-Paul cultivates diverse collaboratives to address complex socio-ecological problems and has a history of leveraging technical expertise\, partnerships and funding opportunities to support small non-profits and Tribes in their conservation work in the Willamette Valley and other regions of the state. Today\, Jean-Paul is focused on strategies that mitigate the impacts of climate change on ecosystems and communities through beaver-based restoration and wildfire resilience actions. When not at the office or exploring beavery creeks and wetlands\, Jean-Paul likes to enjoy the recreational and culinary bounty the Willamette Basin has to offer with his wife and two furry children.

DESCRIPTION:First Fridays are held on the first Friday of every month (except July) from 12-1 pm via Zoom. Join Marion SWCD staff and subject matter experts to learn something new about soil and water conservation and a wide array of related topics. \n \nAccording to Wyatt Williams with Oregon Department of Forestry\, “Since it was first found in the Detroit\, Michigan area back in 2002\, EAB has become the most destructive and costliest forest pest ever to invade North America.” Once Emerald Ash Borer is established\, it decimates ash populations\, leaving waterways exposed and vulnerable to degradation. The long anticipated first sighting of Emerald Ash Borer in Oregon occurred in Forest Grove recently.  Find out how to respond to the looming threat posed by this pest. \nPresenter Christine Buhl is a Forest Entomologist with Oregon Department of Forestry. \n  \n \nIf you need special accommodations\, including translation services\, in order to participate\, please call the office at 503-391-9927 or email office@marionswcd.net as far in advance as possible.

SUMMARY:First Friday: Rain Gardens & Bioswales
DESCRIPTION:First Fridays are held on the first Friday of every month (except July) from 12-1 pm via Zoom. Join Marion SWCD staff and subject matter experts to learn something new about soil and water conservation and a wide array of related topics. \n\n\n\nRain gardens and bioswales are great options for slowing down the flow of stormwater. City of Salem’s Natural Infrastructure Specialist Jesse Dillow will give an overview of rain gardens\, what they are and how they function\, a rundown of how to size and design them\, some plants that work well\, the installation process\, and maintenance needs. \n\n\n\nThis talk will be held in person at Bauman’s Farm and Garden during our Native Plant Sale pick up event. Join this First Friday talk on site or online. \nJesse Dillow has a biology degree from George Fox University and most of his work experience is in horticulture. Jesse worked for the grounds department at George Fox in various capacities for 14 years. He did landscape and irrigation installation and design (including raingardens)\, managed riparian restoration\, maintained landscapes\, and was the superintendent of the department the last two years. He started at the City of Salem in 2020 on the day that the state shut down for COVID. In his current role\, Jesse is in charge of coordinating the maintenance of over 450 city owned green stormwater facilities as well as roughly 100 acres of natural areas and mitigation sites. One of Jesse’s passions is creating landscapes that are both attractive and functional while serving vital ecological functions such as managing stormwater\, providing pollinator habitat\, and providing nesting and forage area for migratory birds. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:First Friday: Going Beyond Flowers: What More Do Bees and Other Insects Need?
DESCRIPTION:Matthew ShepherdDirector of Outreach & Education\, The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe’ve all read about the declining populations of bees and other insects. The good news is that there are things we can do to make our gardens\, parks\, and other greenspaces better for these essential animals. Grow flowers\, yes. Avoid pesticides\, yes. But there is more we should be doing. Matthew Shepherd of the Xerces Society will introduce you to some simple things you can do to make your garden welcoming for insects by introducing conditions and features that will support the entire life cycle of the “little things that run the world.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMatthew Shepherd has spent more than thirty years collaborating with people from all walks of life to create better places for wildlife. Matthew’s career began in England and took him to Kenya before his arrival in the United States a couple of decades ago. He has worked for the Xerces Society since 1999\, initially at the vanguard of a national campaign to protect pollinators\, but now focused on outreach\, community engagement\, and urban conservation. Matthew is author of numerous articles and other publications\, including Attracting Native Pollinators (Storey Publishing\, 2011) and Gardening for Butterflies (Timber Press\, 2016).
