The Great Raindrop Scavenger Hunt is a self-guided digital scavenger hunt that will run March 1-31\, 2024 \nThe theme for 2024 World Water Day is focused on peaceful cooperation around clean water. Access the clues for these hunts via your smartphone to explore the hidden world of water with opportunities to learn about how individuals and municipalities care for our water resources.  This event is part of Winter Wildlife Field Days. \nWater is the building block of life. In this talk we’ll cover some top home-garden pollinator plants\, and how to conserve pollinators year-round in your yard.\n2:45-3:45 Gardening for Hummingbirds (David Craig) Craig is a Professor of Biology and the Co-director of Science Collaborative Research Program at Willamette University.\n4:00-5:00 Gardening for Butterflies. (Stephanie Hazen) A photo-rich review of butterflies expected to be found in the Salem area\, including directions for raising Monarchs butterflies\, the host plant needs of caterpillars and nectar plant needs of adult butterflies.\n\nPresenters\n\nCarol Slavkovsky is a Marion County Master Gardener with a passion for mason bees.\nAaron Anderson of Xerces Society works with the public and Xerces staff to reduce pesticide use in residential landscapes\, including promoting alternative pest control measures and pollinator-friendly gardening practices. Prior to joining Xerces in 2022\, he researched pollinator conservation in urban landscapes\, restored habitat for several endangered butterfly species\, and worked in insect biocontrol. Aaron has a PhD from Oregon State University.\nDavid Craig is a  Professor of Biology at Willamette University who is a “naturalist and behavioral ecologist with field-oriented research that focuses on the response of animals to human modified ecosystems and their subsequent impact on community structure. The work combines life-history\, physiological\, and ecological information to address questions related to patterns of movement especially migration and changes in breeding range. [He has] a general interest in birds and have worked with a wide variety of species\, but the conservation of seabirds and colonial waterbirds such as the Caspian tern (Hydroprogne caspia) have been especially important in [his] career.”\nStephanie Hazen moved to Salem in 1977 right after graduating from Colorado State University’s School of Veterinary Medicine. She owned and operated her own veterinary practice in Salem\, selling it and retiring in 2010. She became interested in Monarch butterflies after seeing several in the milkweed seed production fields at Heritage Seedlings Farm in Salem in 2015. In 2017 Monarchs deposited eggs on their own plants. They raised\, tagged and released 50 Monarchs that summer. One of their Monarchs was spotted in S. California 6 times that winter. Since becoming a Master Gardener in 2018\, and a Master Mellitologist the same year\, Stephanie has been involved in educating the public about Monarch butterflies\, native bees and the benefits of native plants in their gardens ever since. SUMMARY:Small Farm School
DESCRIPTION:Small Farm School is an annual\, full-day event with hands-on workshops and classroom sessions. Both beginning and experienced small-scale farmers will find classes to fit their needs. Our classes cover topics from equipment to soil health\, crop and livestock management\, and more. \nSmall Farm School is an all-day event for beginning AND experienced farmers and small acreage landowners. Field and classroom workshops will address small farm topics such as crop and livestock production\, land access\, funding options\, and management for soil and water conservation. Course offerings change each year\, so if you have attended in the past\, join us again! There is always something new to learn. \nRegistration Fees\n\nRegistration: $80 – August 2 – August 30\nLate registration: $100 – August 31 – September 8\nScholarships available for Veterans\, Black/Indigenous\, and other farmers of color\n$25 discounts are available to the first 20 Marion County residents to register. (Contact Heath for code!)\n\nRegistration fees cover class materials\, lunch\, and a coffee break. Registration fees are refundable up to 7 days before the event (Sept. 6). No walk-in registrations are accepted. Due to space limitations\, Small Farm School reserves the right to close registration on September 8\, 2023\, or when capacity is reached. \nClasses are size-limited and will close when full. SUMMARY:Salmon Watch Volunteer Training
DESCRIPTION:Salmon Watch is a place-based\, experiential field trip that introduces students to local watersheds and the salmon that inhabit them. The field trips are about 4 hours long and are scheduled for mid-September to mid-October. \n\n\n\nVolunteers are essential to Salmon Watch! Each volunteer leads one of these field stations: \n\n\n\n\nSalmon Biology: Help students understand what they are seeing as the salmon build redds and fight for position\, discuss the salmon life cycle\, perform a fish dissection\, and help students understand salmon’s cultural importance.\nMacroinvertebrates: Students wade into the river to explore and collect these marvelous indicators of water quality.\nWater Quality: Share the wonder of science with these tests – use tools and chemistry to test dissolved oxygen\, pH\, temperature\, and turbidity.\nRiparian ecology: This station has a lot of room for you to make it your own as you introduce students to the connections between healthy riparian areas and healthy in-stream habitats.\n\n\n\n\nAttend this half-day training to help you prepare for your Salmon Watch.
