DESCRIPTION:Marion Soil and Water Conservation District (Marion SWCD) is offering Little Habitat Project (LHP) Community Kits to help community spaces create pockets of native habitat that support pollinators\, wildlife\, and healthy ecosystems throughout Marion County. \nThrough the LHP Community Kit giveaway\, Marion SWCD is working to expand habitat connections by providing native plants for community sites interested in establishing or enhancing native plant areas. These kits offer an opportunity to add biodiversity\, support local wildlife\, and help connect people and places through conservation. \nWho Can Participate:\nThe Little Habitat Project\, is open to anyone in Marion County. However\, this year’s Community Kits are intended specifically for community sites and shared spaces that can create habitat connections for people and wildlife. SUMMARY:Native Wildflower Seed Packaging Volunteer Event 
DESCRIPTION:Join Marion Soil and Water Conservation District for a hands-on volunteer event helping package native wildflower seeds for free community giveaways! \n\n\nVolunteers will help prepare packets of Willamette Valley Native Annual Wildflower Mix seeds\, produced by Heritage Seedlings\, that will be shared with community members to support native plants\, pollinators\, birds\, and healthy habitats throughout Marion County. \n\n\nNo experience is needed—just bring your willingness to help! Volunteers will learn more about the importance of native plants and have the opportunity to take home native seeds as a thank-you for participating. \n\n\nThe wildflower mix includes a variety of native annual species that provide nectar and pollen for native bees\, butterflies\, beetles\, flies\, and other beneficial insects; several species also support birds and wildlife. SUMMARY:Salmon Watch Volunteer Training
DESCRIPTION:Do you enjoy teaching kids outdoors? Then Salmon Watch could be a great fit for you! \nWe are seeking volunteers who are kind\, patient\, and excited to work with kids. No teaching experience is required. \nCan’t attend on 8/26 but still interested? Reach out to Kassi at Kassi.Roosth@marionswcd.net and she can share alternative options. \nSign Up to Volunteer for Salmon Watch! \nSalmon Watch is a place-based\, experiential field trip program that introduces students to local watersheds and the salmon that inhabit them. We offer these trips to elementary through high school -aged students. \nField trips will take place from September 14 through October 2 and last approximately 4 hours each. Start and end times are approximate\, and more detailed scheduling information will be provided as the field trips draw closer. \nField trips are held at these locations: \n\nPacksaddle County Park\nNorth Santiam County Park\nSpongs Landing County Park\n\nVolunteers are essential to Salmon Watch! Each volunteer leads one of these field stations: \n\nSalmon Biology: Help students understand what they are seeing as the salmon build redds and fight for position\, discuss the salmon life cycle\, perform a fish dissection\, and help students understand salmon’s cultural importance.\nMacroinvertebrates: Students wade into the river to explore and collect these marvelous indicators of water quality.\nWater Quality: Share the wonder of science with these tests – use tools and chemistry to test dissolved oxygen\, pH\, temperature\, and turbidity.\nRiparian Ecology: This station has a lot of room for you to make it your own as you introduce students to the connections between healthy riparian areas and healthy in-stream habitats.\n\nAttend this half-day training to help you prepare for your Salmon Watch. SUMMARY:First Friday - Disaster Ready: Preparing People & Livestock
DESCRIPTION:When disasters strike\, preparing for the safety of both people and animals can make all the difference. \nJoin Karla Hoggan\, President and Co-Founder of the Oregon Livestock Council (OLC)\, for an informative presentation on livestock disaster preparedness and emergency planning. Learn about OLC’s mission to provide organized evacuation and emergency sheltering assistance for equine and livestock owners\, particularly those with limited resources or functional and access needs. \nThis presentation will cover practical steps every livestock owner can take before an emergency\, including developing evacuation plans\, preparing emergency supply kits\, maintaining ownership records\, implementing animal identification\, and reducing the risk of barn fires. Karla will also introduce Oregon’s first Equine & Livestock Pre-Registration program\, an innovative initiative designed to connect owners with assistance during disasters while helping emergency responders better understand community needs before an emergency occurs. \nWhether you own one horse\, manage a farm\, or simply want to be better prepared\, this presentation will provide valuable information to help protect both people and animals when every minute counts. \nSpeaker Bio:\nKarla Hoggan is the President and Co-Founder of the Oregon Livestock Council and serves as President of the Oregon Horse Council. Following the 2020 Labor Day wildfires and another evacuation in 2022\, she and her husband\, Ron\, recognized the need for an organized\, trained effort to assist livestock owners during disasters. Together\, they helped establish the Oregon Livestock Council to provide evacuation assistance and temporary emergency sheltering for livestock\, with a focus on supporting owners who may lack transportation or have functional and access needs. \nKarla has helped organize and facilitate Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue (TLAER) training throughout Oregon for the past eight years. She is an OEM Be Two Weeks Ready Coordinator\, trained in Australian Person-Centered Emergency Planning (P-CEP)\, and holds certifications in TLAER Operations Level and Emergency Management Basic Applied Practices.
