DESCRIPTION:Join the Mid Willamette Outreach Group for the\, Our River Celebration (formerly known as Stream Celebration) at Minto-Brown Island Park. This free\, family-friendly event invites people of all ages to explore and learn about our local rivers\, streams\, and waterways through hands-on activities and interactive stations. \nVisitors can learn about water quality\, salmon and other aquatic life\, native plants\, and river habitats while discovering simple ways to help protect local waterways. The event is designed as a relaxed\, move-at-your-own-pace experience focused on connecting the community with the Willamette River\, our nearby streams\, and the environment we all share. Representatives from the City of Salem Clean Streams Crew will also be onsite to provide local watershed updates and resources. \nWe hope you’ll join us to celebrate and learn more about the rivers and streams that support our community. \nThe event will be held at the Minto Brown Island Park Pavillion. DESCRIPTION:Fire on the Horizon: Planning for Post-Fire Recovery Before Wildfire Strikes is a free workshop designed for woodland owners and natural resource professionals focused on preparing for recovery before a wildfire occurs. \nThis workshop is a collaborative effort hosted by OSU Extension\, the North Santiam Watershed Council\, and Marion Soil and Water Conservation District. \nParticipants will take part in a combination of indoor presentations and discussion\, followed by field tours of post-fire recovery sites. The workshop will cover wildfire risk assessment\, developing and implementing woodland management plans\, post-fire restoration practices\, and sources of technical and financial assistance. Attendees will also hear from landowners and practitioners who share lessons learned from the 2020 wildfires and provide real-world insight into preparing for future fire events. \nThis hands-on experience is designed to help participants strengthen long-term resilience by planning ahead for post-fire recovery and connecting with local conservation and fire recovery partners. \nPlease note: this event includes both indoor sessions and field travel between sites. SUMMARY:Learn To Paddle | 2026
DESCRIPTION:Learn to Paddle (formerly Learn to Kayak) is a free beginner-friendly paddling workshop designed for adults who want to build confidence on the water and learn the fundamentals of kayaking and paddleboarding. \nParticipants will start with an onshore lesson covering equipment\, water safety\, permits\, and paddling techniques before heading out onto the river with a professional instructor to practice their new skills. Whether you’re completely new to paddling or looking to refresh your skills\, this hands-on class provides a fun and supportive introduction to recreating safely on the water. \nKayaks\, paddleboards\, paddles\, and lifejackets/personal flotation devices (PFDs) will be provided. SUMMARY:Salmon Watch Volunteer Training
DESCRIPTION:Do you enjoy teaching kids outdoors? Then Salmon Watch could be a great fit for you! \nWe are seeking volunteers who are kind\, patient\, and excited to work with kids. No teaching experience is required. \nCan’t attend on 8/26 but still interested? Reach out to Kassi at Kassi.Roosth@marionswcd.net and she can share alternative options. \nSign Up to Volunteer for Salmon Watch! \nSalmon Watch is a place-based\, experiential field trip program that introduces students to local watersheds and the salmon that inhabit them. We offer these trips to elementary through high school -aged students. \nField trips will take place from September 14 through October 2 and last approximately 4 hours each. Start and end times are approximate\, and more detailed scheduling information will be provided as the field trips draw closer. \nField trips are held at these locations: \n\nPacksaddle County Park\nNorth Santiam County Park\nSpongs Landing County Park\n\nVolunteers are essential to Salmon Watch! Each volunteer leads one of these field stations: \n\nSalmon Biology: Help students understand what they are seeing as the salmon build redds and fight for position\, discuss the salmon life cycle\, perform a fish dissection\, and help students understand salmon’s cultural importance.\nMacroinvertebrates: Students wade into the river to explore and collect these marvelous indicators of water quality.\nWater Quality: Share the wonder of science with these tests – use tools and chemistry to test dissolved oxygen\, pH\, temperature\, and turbidity.\nRiparian Ecology: This station has a lot of room for you to make it your own as you introduce students to the connections between healthy riparian areas and healthy in-stream habitats.\n\nAttend this half-day training to help you prepare for your Salmon Watch.
