SUMMARY:First Friday: Responsible Pesticide Use
DESCRIPTION:Join Cesar Zamora\, soil scientist and Agriculture Conservation Planner for the Marion SWCD\, as he gives a crash course on at home pesticide spraying. You will learn all about the various resources available to help you make informed decisions regarding your pest management strategies and the considerations you should have in mind when you plan to tackle a garden garden/yard pest. This webinar will guide you through the before\, during\, and after of at home pesticide control with a real-world example to tie it all together. \nAs part of his work with Marion SWCD\, Cesar used to facilitate the Pudding River Pesticide Stewardship Partnership (PRPSP) program for ODA. The Pesticide Stewardship Partnership is a statewide program that aims to limit offsite pesticide movements through water quality monitoring and meaningful local specific outreach. The PRPSP was recently handed over to the Pudding River Watershed Council this past July. \nCesar moved to Oregon in 2014 to pursue an undergraduate degree in Microbiology at Oregon State University. After working for the USDA he earned his Master’s degree in Soil Science. During this time\, he quickly fell in love with Oregon\, particularly the Willamette valley\, and decided to make this place his home. His love for conservation stems from his appreciation of the outdoors\, and the joy outside recreation provides. \nYou can watch now on YouTube\nAmy Zimmer (503.949.4709).

SUMMARY:Salmon Watch Volunteer Training
DESCRIPTION:Salmon Watch is a place-based\, experiential field trip that introduces students to local watersheds and the salmon that inhabit them. The field trips are about 4 hours long and are scheduled for September 15th to October 3rd. We offer these trips to elementary through high school -aged students. \nVolunteers are essential to Salmon Watch! Each volunteer leads one of these field stations: \n\nSalmon Biology: Help students understand what they are seeing as the salmon build redds and fight for position\, discuss the salmon life cycle\, perform a fish dissection\, and help students understand salmon’s cultural importance.\nMacroinvertebrates: Students wade into the river to explore and collect these marvelous indicators of water quality.\nWater Quality: Share the wonder of science with these tests – use tools and chemistry to test dissolved oxygen\, pH\, temperature\, and turbidity.\nRiparian Ecology: This station has a lot of room for you to make it your own as you introduce students to the connections between healthy riparian areas and healthy in-stream habitats.\n\nAttend this half-day training to help you prepare for your Salmon Watch. Whether you are a brand-new or returning Salmon Watch volunteer\, this training will have something for you! \nCan’t attend on 8/27 but still interested? Reach out to Kassi at Kassi.Roosth@marionswcd.net and she can share alternative options. \nREQUIRED BACKGROUND CHECK\nAll field trip volunteers must complete a background check\, it should only take a few minutes. \nClick here to initiate background check. \nThe background check is free (either choose to have Marion SWCD pay or you can choose to donate the fee.) \nRSVP to reserve your spot for Marion SWCD’s volunteer training on August 27th by Contacing Kassi at the information below. \nIf you need special accommodations\, including translation services\, in order to participate\, please call the event coordinator at 971-382-2000 or email kassi.roosth@marionswcd.net as far in advance as possible.

SUMMARY:First Friday: Integrating TEK into Service-Learning Projects and Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Rose High Bear (Deg Hit’an Dine\, Inupiaq)\, Founding Director of the Native American nonprofit\, Elderberry Wisdom Farm\, will share her experience integrating Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) into their experiential service-learning activities and discuss how they provide it to Native American and other interns of color pursuing conservation career pathways. \nPositive collaborative partnerships are as important to Elderberry Wisdom Farm’s growth and sustainability as the culturally tailored learning model and TEK Internships their team has developed. Much of this success is attributed to EWF’s race reconciliation model and its focus on positive diplomacy. Rose’s partnerships began six years ago with Marion Soil and Water Conservation District and Chemeketa Community College and has expanded to include North Santiam and Pudding River Watershed Councils\, Institute for Applied Ecology and its Willamette Valley Native Plant Partnership\, Oregon Tilth with its TOPP program\, several Oregon tribes\, local organic farms\, and more recently the City of Salem Urban Forestry and the Oregon Department of Forestry: Urban Forestry. \nMore information is available at www.elderberrywisdom.org. \n\nDid you miss last month’s talk on Salmon Surveys in the Pudding River Watershed?  No worries my friend\, you can watch ALL our First Fridays RIGHT HERE!
