SUMMARY:First Friday: Street Tree Selection
DESCRIPTION:First Fridays are held on the first Friday of every month (except July) from 12-1 pm via Zoom. Join Marion SWCD staff and subject matter experts to learn something new about soil and water conservation and a wide array of related topics. \n\n\n\nSalem Urban Forester Milan Davis will talk about planting native trees\, the preferred species to use\, and some of the challenges in nursery availability and soil deficiency. Milan will also discuss the creation of corridors of native trees to allow birds and wildlife access to the Willamette River and to our larger natural areas.  \n\n\n\nPart of Milan’s talk will delve into the practice of assisted migration – City of Salem plants trees native to the Willamette Valley as well as trees native to California and Eastern Oregon based on similar species that might be more heat tolerant than our Willamette valley natives.

RSVP to receive the Zoom link for this free event. \n\n\n\nJared Hibbard-Swanson is an organic gardener and home food preserver who loves to share the bounty of Oregon’s farms and gardens. Jared is the statewide manager for OSU Extension’s food security and safety programs\, and he supports the Master Food Preserver program along with other food access efforts. \n\n\n\nOSU Master Food Preservers are trained volunteers who complete a 40+ hour certification program to learn research-based principles and practices of safe home food preservation. The Master Food Preservers empower their communities to enjoy fresh local produce year round by teaching best practices for canning\, freezing\, dehydrating\, and other food storage techniques.
