DESCRIPTION:Bridging Bytes and Blooms: Embracing Nature through Tech in the City Nature Challenge \n \nMany people view nature and technology as separate entities and often view the two as in conflict. However\, technology can be used to help us better understand and connect with nature under the right circumstances. Join Max Light-Pacheco\, the Volunteer and Community Engagement Specialist for The Nature Conservancy in Oregon\, as he talks about the way the City Nature Challenge has expanded community engagement in the natural world via technology. \nStarted in 2016 as a competition between Los Angeles and San Francisco\, the City Nature Challenge (CNC) has grown into an international event\, motivating people around the world to find and document wildlife in their own cities. Run by the Community Science teams at the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM)\, the CNC is an annual four-day global bioblitz at the end of April\, where cities are in a collaboration-meets-friendly-competition to see what can be accomplished when we all work toward a common goal.More information will become available in March. DESCRIPTION:Join Marion SWCD at this event hosted by Sustainable Silverton. \nThis indoor and outdoor educational event is the second in Sustainable Silverton’s Thriving in Times of Change conference series. It will feature four topic areas that move through Silverton’s climate\, water supply\, fire and smoke threats and impacts\, and plants in our urban forests and gardens. Using the traditional elements – air\, water\, fire\, and earth – as a framework\, each topic expands on and explores past and future actions to create empowerment. Overall\, the day is a progression through what is or has been\, what the future might be\, and available steps which build personal and community resiliency. \nGeneral Admission: $12\nMember Admission: Free \nClick here to purchase tickets. \nYour ticket to this event includes admission to The Oregon Garden. We encourage you to enjoy our grounds after the event! \nIndoor Sessions\nAir\nThe day starts with introductions and seminar overviews. Marion Soil and Water Conservation District will share information with guests about Silverton’s climate – our historical climate and what future climate changes mean for our part of Oregon. This topic will cover temperature throughout the year\, precipitation\, snowpack and drought patterns. \nWater\nThe second session is about Silverton’s water resource. Silverton City Manager\, Cory Misley\, will present on Silverton’s water supply which supports our lives here\, our gardens\, and safety. This topic will discuss water resources – Abiqua and Silver creek watershed area and elevations\, water sources\, service details and current drought limitation policy. Over the course of the day\, attendees will be supplied with knowledge to interpret this data and adjust their own actions towards building resiliency. \nEarth\nWith the third seminar set we get our roots into the earth. Urban Forester Eric Hammond will share about Silverton’s urban forest – all the plants and trees that keep us  green and shaded in the summer. During the second half of this session\, Alyson Budde will expand on practical implementation when she presents information on soil and the ground that our plants\, the urban forest\, grows from. Marion Soil and Water Conservation District will also discuss growing your own urban oasis. Taken together\, this topic will cover historical gardening practices and  alterations to those habits – lawns\, irrigation\, mulch\, high-impact inputs – and plant selection to keep attractive and functional gardens that are less environmentally impactful. \nFire\nThe fourth seminar is presented in cooperation with OSU’s Extension Fire Program. During this session\, Kayla Bordelon will talk about fire and smoke in the Willamette Valley. She will talk about increasing fire risk and will provide guests with facts about the impact caused by fire\, smoke\, how to fire-harden our landscapes and homes and the real and significant impact these actions can have. \nOutdoor Sessions\nFire\nKayla Bordelon will continue her presentation with outdoor assessment and practical fire-hardening steps guests can take at home. \nEarth\nAlyson Budde will follow with a practical demonstration about how to evaluate soil and the steps to take to regenerate the biome. \nEarth & Water\nWe continue talking about earth and water with the practical sessions by Marion Soil and Water Conservation District. There are two brief interrelated sessions covering adapting your garden and de-stressing water in your garden. These will cover design considerations and actions that create greater drought resilience\, such as irrigation zones\, use of mulch\, selection of Western natives and other deep drought resilient plants. Time will be spent on discussion of irrigation\, style\, timing\, duration\, how to get the most out of it\, and doing it on a budget. \nEarth\nThe final two sessions are meant to be specific and practical for Silverton’s ecosystem. Ron Garst will lead a conversation about habitat gardening techniques and practices. He will provide guests with steps they can take in our own yards to increase the usable wildlife habitat and about the specific animals we have in Silverton that will benefit from these changes. \nConcluding\, Eric Hammond and Kurt Berning\, Pudding River Watershed Council\, will lead a discussion about how to be an OAKeeper at home and in the community. We will look at Oregon white oaks and how to treat them as an affirmation of a resilient future.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a “gardening with natives” tour of 2 yards in Keizer\, OR. \nTwo community members will share ideas and inspiration for creating habitat in your yard. \nAmanda Robinson’s yard is an example of the early stages of lawn removal\, to a mostly native yard habitat. She is a newly certified participant in the Little Habitat Project and working on all sorts of exciting projects. \nSandi’s 1.67 acre garden includes mature trees and shrubs\, planted before they moved here 14 years ago. Many non-native perennials and trees that we added\, and examples of their recent focus on habitat includes a grove of fir trees\, a .3 acre meadow planted just this winter\, a new hedgerow\, willow windbreak\, downspout catchment\, small rain garden\, various water sources for birds and pollinators\, a 450 sq ft brush pile\, and about 140 varieties of native plants\, mostly planted in the last 3 years. DESCRIPTION:Homeschool families are invited to attend this free learning opportunity at Ankeny Hill Nature Center. \n \nJune is National Pollinator Month. Explore the wonderful world of pollinators at this special homeschool event. Science and craft activities will be geared to students ages 5 to 12; older and younger siblings are welcome\, too. Walk the trails to visit all the stations or focus on the activities held close to Gehlar Hall. Bring your lunch or snacks – we have picnic tables and a place for you to fill your water bottles. Be prepared to pack in and pack out your items and leave the pets at home.  Parking is limited\, we encourage carpooling. Scroll down to RSVP. \nVolunteer! We are recruiting volunteers to assist at the learning stations. Shifts are from 9-11:45 am and 11:30am – 2pm. Click here to volunteer! \nActivities  \n\nBecome a Pollinator – Transform into a honey bee\, ladybug\, monarch butterfly and more with Salem Environmental Education.\nPonds Are Alive! – Come learn about the cool bugs and other critters that call the wetlands of Ankeny Hill home with Oregon State University.\nDo You Know Your Noxious Weeds? – Noxious Weed ID Study Guide and Quiz with live samples to ID with Oregon Dept. of Agriculture.\nWhat’s the Difference? – Learn to tell bees\, wasps and flies apart with Marion Co. Master Gardeners.\nBuild-a-Bug – Students will investigate and make observations of insect anatomy and insect characteristics\, and then build their own bug using craft supplies. All insects should have 6 legs\, 3 body parts\, and compound eyes with Marion Co. 4-H Jr. Master Gardeners.\nHummingbirds Pollinate\, too! – Showcase the hummingbirds of the Willamette Valley and explain how they pollinate. We will have 3D visuals and also have some coloring pages and prizes. Through a display of local hummingbirds and activities\, visitors will learn about one of Oregon’s avian pollinators with Salem Audubon Society.\nArts & Crafts – Get crafty with Ankeny Hill Nature Center and Marion SWCD.\nReading Nook – Take some quiet time to explore books about pollinators.\nForest Bee BINGO – Test your knowledge about forest bees by playing BINGO and earning points. with Oregon Forest Resources Institute.\nSoil Tunnel – Explore the hidden world of soil in this fun crawl-through experience with a scavenger hunt with Marion SWCD.\nPollinators to Product – Match the pollinator to the plant in this fun activity! Color your own mask and transform into your favorite insect with Xerces Society.\nBlock Printing with Native Plants – Learn about plants that are important for pollinators and people\, the create a card using stamps of species grown at the Confederated Tribe of Grand Ronde’s Native Plant Materials Program\nHoney Bees: Gateway to Native Bees – Discover honey bees & native bees. Ankeny Hill Nature Center\nFlower Power! Learn simple flower anatomy and get an up close look at native plant and pollinator species with observation tools!\nSoil Health Rainfall Demo – We will use a rainfall simulator and tabletop soil aggregate demonstrations to understand how different managements of soils and plants can impact rainfall infiltration or runoff with Natural Resources Conservation Service.\nMini-Habitats to Take Home – Plant your own habitat to support birds and pollinators!\n\nFantastic Event Partners Include:\n\nAnkeny Hill Nature Center  \n\nThe Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Natural Resources Dept. \nMarion Soil and Water Conservation District  \nNatural Resources Conservation Service \nOregon Dept. of Ag.
