SUMMARY:First Friday: Army Corps Operations in the Willamette Basin
DESCRIPTION:Presentation: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Operations in the Willamette Basin with emphasis on the Santiam Basin \nThe U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) operates and maintains a system of 13 dams and reservoirs within the Willamette River basin of northwestern Oregon. Each dam contributes to a water resource management system providing flood risk management\, hydroelectric power generation\, water quality improvement\, irrigation and municipal water supply\, recreation\, and ecosystem habitat benefits on the Willamette River and many of its tributaries (authorizations). System operations often require balancing across the multiple authorized purposes. Achieving this balance is complex and has changed over the life of the Willamette Project. Often\, objectives to support one fish life history\, species\, or authorized purposes conflict with another. This presentation will provide background on the system\, review existing operations\, and explore future changes to the system. \nPresenter: Greg Taylor\, Supervisory Fisheries Biologist\, US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) \nGreg Taylor has been employed as a fisheries biologist in the Willamette Basin since February 1998. He worked for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife for 3 years conducting investigations on bull trout in the McKenzie and Middle Fork Willamette Basins. Since November 2001(23 years) Greg has been employed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a Supervisory Fisheries Biologist for the Willamette and Rogue Projects. SUMMARY:Salmon Watch Volunteer Training
DESCRIPTION:Salmon Watch is a place-based\, experiential field trip that introduces students to local watersheds and the salmon that inhabit them. The field trips are about 4 hours long and are scheduled for mid-September to mid-October. We offer these trips to elementary through high school aged students. \nVolunteers are essential to Salmon Watch! Each volunteer leads one of these field stations: \n\nSalmon Biology: Help students understand what they are seeing as the salmon build redds and fight for position\, discuss the salmon life cycle\, perform a fish dissection\, and help students understand salmon’s cultural importance.\nMacroinvertebrates: Students wade into the river to explore and collect these marvelous indicators of water quality.\nWater Quality: Share the wonder of science with these tests – use tools and chemistry to test dissolved oxygen\, pH\, temperature\, and turbidity.\nRiparian Ecology: This station has a lot of room for you to make it your own as you introduce students to the connections between healthy riparian areas and healthy in-stream habitats.\n\nAttend this half-day training to help you prepare for your Salmon Watch. SUMMARY:First Friday: Saving the Great White Oaks
DESCRIPTION:Saving the Great White Oaks of Marion County: An Invitation to Share Stories \nIn Marion County\, Oregon white oaks are culturally and ecologically vital. The oak savannas and woodlands\, rich in biodiversity\, have supported a dynamic ecosystem for over 10\,000 years. Oaks were central to the Kalapuya people\, who relied on their acorns for food\, and the oaks’ cultural significance continued into the European settlement era\, which brought significant changes. Many oaks were cleared for agriculture and urban development\, leading to habitat loss and fragmentation. Today\, threats like climate change\, disease\, and urban expansion challenge the survival of these trees. Great white oaks are crucial for maintaining ecological productivity in Marion County. Their deep root systems stabilize soil\, reduce erosion\, and prevent landslides. These roots also improve soil structure\, enhancing water infiltration and retention\, which benefits local watersheds\, natural habitats\, and agricultural lands. Local organizations and community groups are working to protect and restore oak habitats through planting and land management practices. Sharing personal stories and experiences with these trees is also crucial\, as they contribute to conserving biodiversity and cultural history\, which will help preserve these iconic oaks for future generations.  \nPresenter: David Craig\nDavid Craig has been a behavioral ecologist for 30+ years\, focusing his field-oriented research on the response of animals to human-modified ecosystems and subsequent changes in distribution and movement patterns. The work combines life-history\, and physiological and ecological information to address questions related to migration\, predation\, parental care\, and social behavior. Today Craig has a particular interest in nuthatches\, oaks\, & public health\, but has developed expertise with many species including crows\, terns\, cormorants\, gulls\, jays\, ravens\, plovers\, murrelets\, squirrels\, and grasshoppers. He grew up in Scappoose\, Oregon\, and attended Lewis & Clark College\, the University of Colorado\, and Oregon State University before becoming a Professor of Biology and the Co-director of the Science Collaborative Research Program at Willamette University. Craig’s passion for interdisciplinary and collaborative work helped grow undergraduate research programs in the Pacific Northwest funded by the National Science Foundation\, Carnegie Mellon Foundation\, and MJ Murdock Charitable Trust.  He is studying chinuk wawa\, always reading a new book\, and planning his next trip or meal with a large circle of friends and family. DESCRIPTION:Come see Chinook salmon spawning in the North Santiam River and chat with experts about it. An experience of a lifetime! \nWe’ll have educators on hand to explain what the salmon are doing. This is a free\, move-at-your-own-pace event. DESCRIPTION:Which birds are here all the time\, which ones come and go with the seasons? We will look at different birds’ preferences from grassland to marsh to town gardens to mountain forest. \nPresenter\nHarry Fuller is a veteran birding guide who lives in Salem. He currently leads field trips for the Malheur Field Station in eastern Oregon. He also leads trips for Salem Audubon\, other local groups and private clients. Ankeny National Wildlife Refuge is a favorite birding location. He has written four natural history books: San Francisco’s Natural History: Sand Dunes to Streetcars; Great Gray Owls of CA-OR; Freeway Birding; and most recently Birding Harney County. Check out his bird blogs: Ecowise and Towheeblog and his birding website.  He also contributes to “Salem Turkey Tracker” group on Facebook.
