SUMMARY:Conservation Club: Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) Trapping Workshop
DESCRIPTION:We are having intermittent problems with our RSVP system.  If you can not RSVP with the the link above\, please contact amy.zimmer@marionswcd.net.  Thank you for your interest in conservation!\n\n\nEmerald Ash Borer (EAB)\, an invasive beetle that kills ash trees\, has been detected in Oregon and poses a serious threat to our native Oregon ash and the streamside habitat they support. Early detection is critical to slowing its spread and protecting these important ecosystems. \nJoin Marion Soil and Water Conservation District for a hands-on workshop focused on Emerald Ash Borer detection and community monitoring. Participants will receive a brief overview of EAB\, learn how to recognize signs of an EAB infestation\, and hear updates on local trapping efforts underway in Marion County. Attendees will practice setting an EAB trap and receive one to take home and install on their property\, helping expand our local monitoring network and support early detection of this invasive pest. \nThis workshop is especially intended for landowners and land managers with streamside areas\, natural areas\, or mixed woodlands that contain Oregon ash trees. If you steward property where ash trees are present\, your participation can play an important role in early detection and community preparedness. \nSpace is limited to 20 participants due to trap availability\, as each participant will receive a trap to install and monitor on their property. \nThis workshop is part of an Emerald ash borer (EAB) series aimed at preparing landowners for the anticipated impacts of the invasive EAB beetle on Oregon’s native ash trees. DESCRIPTION:Learn to Fish is a free community event that brings together families\, environmental organizations\, local governments\, and other community partners to promote enjoyment and stewardship of the Willamette River! \nSix fishing skill stations will be set up to teach families the basic introductory skills needed to fish for trout and warm water species. Stations include: casting\, knot-tying & rigging\, water safety\, fish ID & anatomy\, stewardship\, and aquatic habitats. \nThe Learn to Fish event begins at 9:00am at Keizer Rapids Park in the grassy area east of the boat ramp parking lot and will end at 11:30am. Complete a passport for the opportunity to win a door prize! \n***Please note: we will not be fishing as this is a skill building event. This presentation will explore the history of Salem’s drinking water\, where our water originates\, how water becomes polluted\, and the treatment processes used to ensure clean\, safe water reaches homes and businesses throughout the community. \nFrom watershed to faucet\, attendees will gain a better understanding of the journey water takes before it reaches our taps and the important role water treatment and stewardship play in protecting this essential resource. \nSpeaker Bio:\nNenette Sequira has lived and taught in Salem since 1994. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and French\, along with a Master’s degree in Literacy Instruction\, and brings more than 20 years of experience teaching elementary and middle school students. She also spent two years in China teaching conversational English to post-graduate and college students. \nAlthough Nenette began college as a Marine Biology major\, she discovered her passion for education while teaching swimming lessons during high school and college. This small-group tour will give attendees the opportunity to learn how compost is produced using aerated static pile systems and to see the composting process in action. \nThe tour will be led by Tim Rice from Recology Organics\, who will guide participants through the facility and explain how organic materials\, including yard waste\, are processed into compost. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions throughout the tour. \nAt the end of the event\, participants will have the opportunity to take home up to a 5-gallon bucket of compost. DESCRIPTION:Learn to Paddle (formerly Learn to Kayak) is a free beginner-friendly paddling workshop designed for adults who want to build confidence on the water and learn the fundamentals of kayaking and paddleboarding. \nParticipants will start with an onshore lesson covering equipment\, water safety\, permits\, and paddling techniques before heading out onto the river with a professional instructor to practice their new skills. Whether you’re completely new to paddling or looking to refresh your skills\, this hands-on class provides a fun and supportive introduction to recreating safely on the water. \nKayaks\, paddleboards\, paddles\, and lifejackets/personal flotation devices (PFDs) will be provided. DESCRIPTION:Join Marion Soil and Water Conservation District staff members Sarah Hamilton\, Native & Invasive Plant Specialist\, and Chelsea Blank\, Natural Areas Conservation Planner\, for an informative webinar focused on weed management and site preparation strategies for areas impacted by Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). \nAs EAB continues to threaten and kill ash trees across the region\, proactive planning can help property owners successfully establish replacement trees while reducing future challenges. During this presentation\, participants will learn practical steps for preparing sites\, managing weeds\, and creating healthier landscapes that support long-term resilience. \nSarah and Chelsea bring a great deal of experience in habitat restoration\, native and invasive plant management\, and conservation planning to this discussion. \nIn her role at Marion SWCD\, Sarah works with landowners to develop conservation projects\, improve wildlife and pollinator habitat\, and provide guidance on native and invasive plants. With a background in forest ecology\, restoration\, and invasive plant management\, Sarah has spent her career helping communities and landowners better understand and care for natural areas. \nMeanwhile\, in her role at the district\, Chelsea supports landowners and communities through natural area conservation planning and habitat restoration efforts. Her experience includes salmon habitat restoration\, maintaining public green spaces\, and protecting natural resources. DESCRIPTION:Join Marion Soil and Water Conservation District for a hands-on volunteer event helping package native wildflower seeds for free community giveaways! \n\n\nVolunteers will help prepare packets of Willamette Valley Native Annual Wildflower Mix seeds\, produced by Heritage Seedlings\, that will be shared with community members to support native plants\, pollinators\, birds\, and healthy habitats throughout Marion County. \n\n\nNo experience is needed—just bring your willingness to help! Volunteers will learn more about the importance of native plants and have the opportunity to take home native seeds as a thank-you for participating. \n\n\nThe wildflower mix includes a variety of native annual species that provide nectar and pollen for native bees\, butterflies\, beetles\, flies\, and other beneficial insects; several species also support birds and wildlife. DESCRIPTION:Do you enjoy teaching kids outdoors? Then Salmon Watch could be a great fit for you! \nWe are seeking volunteers who are kind\, patient\, and excited to work with kids. No teaching experience is required. \nCan’t attend on 8/26 but still interested? Reach out to Kassi at Kassi.Roosth@marionswcd.net and she can share alternative options. \nSign Up to Volunteer for Salmon Watch! \nSalmon Watch is a place-based\, experiential field trip program that introduces students to local watersheds and the salmon that inhabit them. We offer these trips to elementary through high school -aged students. \nField trips will take place from September 14 through October 2 and last approximately 4 hours each. Start and end times are approximate\, and more detailed scheduling information will be provided as the field trips draw closer. \nField trips are held at these locations: \n\nPacksaddle County Park\nNorth Santiam County Park\nSpongs Landing County Park\n\nVolunteers are essential to Salmon Watch! Each volunteer leads one of these field stations: \n\nSalmon Biology: Help students understand what they are seeing as the salmon build redds and fight for position\, discuss the salmon life cycle\, perform a fish dissection\, and help students understand salmon’s cultural importance.\nMacroinvertebrates: Students wade into the river to explore and collect these marvelous indicators of water quality.\nWater Quality: Share the wonder of science with these tests – use tools and chemistry to test dissolved oxygen\, pH\, temperature\, and turbidity.\nRiparian Ecology: This station has a lot of room for you to make it your own as you introduce students to the connections between healthy riparian areas and healthy in-stream habitats.\n\nAttend this half-day training to help you prepare for your Salmon Watch.
