SUMMARY:First Friday: Integrating TEK into Service-Learning Projects and Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Rose High Bear (Deg Hit’an Dine\, Inupiaq)\, Founding Director of the Native American nonprofit\, Elderberry Wisdom Farm\, will share her experience integrating Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) into their experiential service-learning activities and discuss how they provide it to Native American and other interns of color pursuing conservation career pathways. \nPositive collaborative partnerships are as important to Elderberry Wisdom Farm’s growth and sustainability as the culturally tailored learning model and TEK Internships their team has developed. Much of this success is attributed to EWF’s race reconciliation model and its focus on positive diplomacy. Rose’s partnerships began six years ago with Marion Soil and Water Conservation District and Chemeketa Community College and has expanded to include North Santiam and Pudding River Watershed Councils\, Institute for Applied Ecology and its Willamette Valley Native Plant Partnership\, Oregon Tilth with its TOPP program\, several Oregon tribes\, local organic farms\, and more recently the City of Salem Urban Forestry and the Oregon Department of Forestry: Urban Forestry. \nMore information is available at www.elderberrywisdom.org. \n\nDid you miss last month’s talk on Salmon Surveys in the Pudding River Watershed?  No worries my friend\, you can watch ALL our First Fridays RIGHT HERE!

SUMMARY:Great Raindrop Scavenger Hunt
DESCRIPTION:The Great Raindrop Scavenger Hunt is a self-guided scavenger hunt that will get you exploring local parks. Search for these raindrops featuring QR codes with fun water facts! At the end of the scavenger hunt\, you will find a prize! We will be celebrating World Water Day (March 22nd)\, with this year’s  theme “Water and gender equality: Where water flows\, equality grows.” This theme highlights the ways in which a lack of access to safe\, clean drinking reduces opportunities for women and girls\, who are often responsible for the time-consuming tasks of collecting and managing water. By drawing attention to the importance of safe\, clean drinking water and sanitation for all people\, we hope to spark inspiration for you to get involved locally to protect and improve water quality. \nYou can participate in the Great Raindrop Scavenger Hunt at Keizer Rapids Park or Bush’s Pasture Park (participate at one or both locations)! \nLook for the raindrop with a QR code to start the hunt — there’s no other signage\, so finding it is part of the fun! Need a hint? Here’s where to begin your search: \nKeizer Rapids Park: Check the parking lot side of the kiosk at the dog park parking lot. \nBush’s Pasture Park: Head to the far end of the Mission St. parking lot near the creek.

SUMMARY:Conservation Spotlight: City of Salem EAB Management
DESCRIPTION:On this episode of Conservation Spotlight\, we welcome Milan Davis\, Urban Forester with the City of Salem\, to discuss the city’s proactive management of urban ash trees in the face of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). The City of Salem has not yet had a confirmed presence of EAB but is within 25 miles of the known infestation area\, and so preparing for the arrival of this invasive and extremely destructive forest pest is crucial. Join us to hear the strategies\, partnerships\, and work already being done to protect our valuable urban trees from EAB. \nThe Conservation Spotlight is a radio segment shining light on partnerships and programs for natural resources that airs on the third Wednesday of every month at 8 AM as part of the weekly Willamette Wake Up radio program on KMUZ 100.7 and 88.5 FM. Marion SWCD shares the Spotlight with Polk SWCD . \nCan’t tune in live or want to hear more?
