SUMMARY:First Friday: Beavers in the Willamette Basin
DESCRIPTION:Beavers and their habitats provide numerous benefits for ecosystems and communities. They can also cause conflicts on working lands\, roadways\, and urban areas. Jean-Paul Zagarola will discuss how the Mid-Willamette Beaver Partnership is developing tools to restore beneficial beaver habitat and resources for people in the region to better co-exist with beavers while mitigating their negative impacts. \nJean-Paul A. Zagarola – Senior Program Manager for the Bonneville Environmental Foundation\, Jean-Paul has been supporting conservation and restoration efforts in Oregon since 2012. Jean-Paul cultivates diverse collaboratives to address complex socio-ecological problems and has a history of leveraging technical expertise\, partnerships and funding opportunities to support small non-profits and Tribes in their conservation work in the Willamette Valley and other regions of the state. Today\, Jean-Paul is focused on strategies that mitigate the impacts of climate change on ecosystems and communities through beaver-based restoration and wildfire resilience actions. When not at the office or exploring beavery creeks and wetlands\, Jean-Paul likes to enjoy the recreational and culinary bounty the Willamette Basin has to offer with his wife and two furry children.

Prior to joining Xerces in 2022\, he researched pollinator conservation in urban landscapes\, restored habitat for several endangered butterfly species\, and worked in insect biocontrol. Aaron has a PhD from Oregon State University.\nDavid Craig is a  Professor of Biology at Willamette University who is a “naturalist and behavioral ecologist with field-oriented research that focuses on the response of animals to human modified ecosystems and their subsequent impact on community structure. The work combines life-history\, physiological\, and ecological information to address questions related to patterns of movement especially migration and changes in breeding range. [He has] a general interest in birds and have worked with a wide variety of species\, but the conservation of seabirds and colonial waterbirds such as the Caspian tern (Hydroprogne caspia) have been especially important in [his] career.”\nStephanie Hazen moved to Salem in 1977 right after graduating from Colorado State University’s School of Veterinary Medicine. She owned and operated her own veterinary practice in Salem\, selling it and retiring in 2010. She became interested in Monarch butterflies after seeing several in the milkweed seed production fields at Heritage Seedlings Farm in Salem in 2015. In 2017 Monarchs deposited eggs on their own plants. They raised\, tagged and released 50 Monarchs that summer. One of their Monarchs was spotted in S. California 6 times that winter. Since becoming a Master Gardener in 2018\, and a Master Mellitologist the same year\, Stephanie has been involved in educating the public about Monarch butterflies\, native bees and the benefits of native plants in their gardens ever since. To get a closer look at Ray and Stephanie’s back yard see the 9 minute video she made several years ago called “Our Back Yard.” Space is limited for this free event.\n\nRSVP to reserve your spot.

SUMMARY:First Friday: Native Fish of the Willamette Basin
DESCRIPTION:First Fridays are held on the first Friday of every month (except July) from 12-1 pm via Zoom. Join Marion SWCD staff and subject matter experts to learn something new and ask questions about soil and water conservation and a wide array of related topics. \n \nBrian Bangs\, Aquatic Ecologist with US Fish & Wildlife Service\, will talk about the diversity of native nongame fish (shiners\, dace\, and suckers\, etc.) and their role in the larger ecology. He’ll also discuss species in recovery (chub\, bull trout\, salmon\, and steelhead) and outline several actions landowners can take to help out. \nIf you need special accommodations\, including translation services\, in order to participate\, please call the event coordinator at 503-949-4709 or email heath.keirstead@marionswcd.net as far in advance as possible.
