Five board positions will be up for election in 2026\, making this a great opportunity to learn how you can get involved. \nServing on the Board offers the chance to support local conservation efforts\, gain leadership and governance experience\, collaborate with community members and natural resource professionals\, and help ensure District programs reflect the diverse needs and perspectives of Marion County residents. SUMMARY:Conservation Club: Recology Organics Compost Facility Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join Marion Soil and Water Conservation District and Recology Organics for a behind-the-scenes tour of the Recology Organics Compost Facility. This small-group tour will give attendees the opportunity to learn how compost is produced using aerated static pile systems and to see the composting process in action. \nThe tour will be led by Tim Rice from Recology Organics\, who will guide participants through the facility and explain how organic materials\, including yard waste\, are processed into compost. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions throughout the tour. \nAt the end of the event\, participants will have the opportunity to take home up to a 5-gallon bucket of compost. Please bring your own bucket if you would like to participate. \nDue to limited parking at the facility\, attendees should expect to carpool from Porter Boone Park to the compost facility. This presentation will explore the history of Salem’s drinking water\, where our water originates\, how water becomes polluted\, and the treatment processes used to ensure clean\, safe water reaches homes and businesses throughout the community. \nFrom watershed to faucet\, attendees will gain a better understanding of the journey water takes before it reaches our taps and the important role water treatment and stewardship play in protecting this essential resource. \nSpeaker Bio:\nNenette Sequira has lived and taught in Salem since 1994. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and French\, along with a Master’s degree in Literacy Instruction\, and brings more than 20 years of experience teaching elementary and middle school students. She also spent two years in China teaching conversational English to post-graduate and college students. \nAlthough Nenette began college as a Marine Biology major\, she discovered her passion for education while teaching swimming lessons during high school and college. This event is designed for farmers and landowners near streams who are interested in supporting the long-term productivity of their land while improving water quality and enhancing habitat. \nA guest speaker will share examples of what restoration can look like in an agricultural setting\, offering insights on balancing conservation with working lands. Marion SWCD staff will also share recent water quality findings from the Strategic Implementation Area (SIA) to provide local context – especially for those near Howell Prairie Creek. \nAt this workshop\, you can: \n\nConnect with neighboring farmers and local landowners\nLearn practical\, on-the-ground approaches to streamside restoration\nExplore ways to stabilize banks and reduce flood impacts\nExplore funding and technical assistance opportunities\nTalk one-on-one with SWCD staff about your land and project ideas\n\nNo pressure and no compliance – just a chance to get useful information\, ask questions\, and see what might work for your operation. \nCome by\, grab a snack and a cup of coffee\, and join the conversation. \nJoin us starting at 8:30 AM when doors open. DESCRIPTION:On this episode of Conservation Spotlight\, we welcome Milan Davis\, Urban Forester with the City of Salem\, to discuss the city’s proactive management of urban ash trees in the face of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). The City of Salem has not yet had a confirmed presence of EAB but is within 25 miles of the known infestation area\, and so preparing for the arrival of this invasive and extremely destructive forest pest is crucial. Join us to hear the strategies\, partnerships\, and work already being done to protect our valuable urban trees from EAB. \nThe Conservation Spotlight is a radio segment shining light on partnerships and programs for natural resources that airs on the third Wednesday of every month at 8 AM as part of the weekly Willamette Wake Up radio program on KMUZ 100.7 and 88.5 FM. Early detection is critical to slowing its spread and protecting these important ecosystems. \nJoin Marion Soil and Water Conservation District for a hands-on workshop focused on Emerald Ash Borer detection and community monitoring. Participants will receive a brief overview of EAB\, learn how to recognize signs of an EAB infestation\, and hear updates on local trapping efforts underway in Marion County. Attendees will practice setting an EAB trap and receive one to take home and install on their property\, helping expand our local monitoring network and support early detection of this invasive pest. \nThis workshop is especially intended for landowners and land managers with streamside areas\, natural areas\, or mixed woodlands that contain Oregon ash trees. If you steward property where ash trees are present\, your participation can play an important role in early detection and community preparedness. \nSpace is limited to 20 participants due to trap availability\, as each participant will receive a trap to install and monitor on their property. \nThis workshop is part of an Emerald ash borer (EAB) series aimed at preparing landowners for the anticipated impacts of the invasive EAB beetle on Oregon’s native ash trees. Formal certifications include Chemistry technician certificate\, Diploma in computer programming\, Project Management Professional (PMP)\, Stanford Certified Project Manager (SCPM)\, Six Sigma Green and Blackbelt certification. \nChris was born in London\, England and emigrated to the US in 1984. In this talk\, they will share their process of tapping bigleaf maple trees to make a delicious\, bold and uniquely Pacific Northwest maple syrup. DESCRIPTION:In this presentation Stephanie Hazen (Master Gardener/Mellitogist) talks about gardening for wildlife. \nStephanie Hazen moved to Salem in 1977 after graduating from Colorado State University School of Veterinary Medicine. She owned and operated a small animal/exotics veterinary clinic in Salem until retiring in 2012.  She took up photography in retirement\, favoring natural history subjects such as native bees\, flowers\, and wildlife. Stephanie became a Master Gardener and a Master Mellitologist in 2018 through Oregon State University programs and enjoys sharing and educating about native plants\, pollinators\, animals and birds. \n\n
