SUMMARY:First Friday: Urban Soil Health and Management
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Soil Scientist Marissa Theve will explain why urban soils are important\, what sets them apart\, and some common contaminants and management practices – including the use of biochar. \nPresenter\nMarissa Theve– Marissa hales from rural Eastern Connecticut where she grew up playing in the woods and brook near her home. She earned a bachelor of science in environmental science and management from the University of Rhode Island\, followed by a master’s of science in natural resources and the environment from the University of Connecticut. In grad school Marissa was hired full-time by the USDA-NRCS soil survey office in Tolland\, CT\, where she spent 6 years studying tidal marshes\, helping finish urban mapping in New York City\, and working on several subaqueous soil projects. Marissa moved to Salem\, OR in 2016 to accept a position at the Bureau of Land Management where she worked for over 6 years helping decision makers make informed choices about timber sales\, recreation activities\, and restoration projects. Since 2023\, Marissa has rejoined the USDA-NRCS as a resource soil scientist covering the wetland and highly erodible land program as well as the soil science outreach needs of the nine northwest counties of Oregon.

SUMMARY:First Friday: Saving the Great White Oaks
DESCRIPTION:Saving the Great White Oaks of Marion County: An Invitation to Share Stories \nIn Marion County\, Oregon white oaks are culturally and ecologically vital. The oak savannas and woodlands\, rich in biodiversity\, have supported a dynamic ecosystem for over 10\,000 years. Oaks were central to the Kalapuya people\, who relied on their acorns for food\, and the oaks’ cultural significance continued into the European settlement era\, which brought significant changes. Many oaks were cleared for agriculture and urban development\, leading to habitat loss and fragmentation. Today\, threats like climate change\, disease\, and urban expansion challenge the survival of these trees. Great white oaks are crucial for maintaining ecological productivity in Marion County. Their deep root systems stabilize soil\, reduce erosion\, and prevent landslides. These roots also improve soil structure\, enhancing water infiltration and retention\, which benefits local watersheds\, natural habitats\, and agricultural lands. Local organizations and community groups are working to protect and restore oak habitats through planting and land management practices. Sharing personal stories and experiences with these trees is also crucial\, as they contribute to conserving biodiversity and cultural history\, which will help preserve these iconic oaks for future generations.  \nPresenter: David Craig\nDavid Craig has been a behavioral ecologist for 30+ years\, focusing his field-oriented research on the response of animals to human-modified ecosystems and subsequent changes in distribution and movement patterns. The work combines life-history\, and physiological and ecological information to address questions related to migration\, predation\, parental care\, and social behavior. Today Craig has a particular interest in nuthatches\, oaks\, & public health\, but has developed expertise with many species including crows\, terns\, cormorants\, gulls\, jays\, ravens\, plovers\, murrelets\, squirrels\, and grasshoppers. He grew up in Scappoose\, Oregon\, and attended Lewis & Clark College\, the University of Colorado\, and Oregon State University before becoming a Professor of Biology and the Co-director of the Science Collaborative Research Program at Willamette University. Craig’s passion for interdisciplinary and collaborative work helped grow undergraduate research programs in the Pacific Northwest funded by the National Science Foundation\, Carnegie Mellon Foundation\, and MJ Murdock Charitable Trust.  He is studying chinuk wawa\, always reading a new book\, and planning his next trip or meal with a large circle of friends and family. You can find him on most social media @DavidPCraig.

SUMMARY:First Friday: Army Corps Operations in the Willamette Basin
DESCRIPTION:Presentation: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Operations in the Willamette Basin with emphasis on the Santiam Basin \nThe U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) operates and maintains a system of 13 dams and reservoirs within the Willamette River basin of northwestern Oregon. Each dam contributes to a water resource management system providing flood risk management\, hydroelectric power generation\, water quality improvement\, irrigation and municipal water supply\, recreation\, and ecosystem habitat benefits on the Willamette River and many of its tributaries (authorizations). System operations often require balancing across the multiple authorized purposes. Achieving this balance is complex and has changed over the life of the Willamette Project. Often\, objectives to support one fish life history\, species\, or authorized purposes conflict with another. This presentation will provide background on the system\, review existing operations\, and explore future changes to the system. \nPresenter: Greg Taylor\, Supervisory Fisheries Biologist\, US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) \nGreg Taylor has been employed as a fisheries biologist in the Willamette Basin since February 1998. He worked for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife for 3 years conducting investigations on bull trout in the McKenzie and Middle Fork Willamette Basins. Since November 2001(23 years) Greg has been employed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a Supervisory Fisheries Biologist for the Willamette and Rogue Projects. He is responsible for operation and maintenance of fish facilities\, serves as a technical advisor on fisheries issues\, and implementation of the Willamette Project Biological Opinion. \nThe Marion SWCD is an equal opportunity employer\, providing services to the public without regard to race\, religion\, color\, sexual orientation\, gender identity\, national origin\, mental or physical disability\, marital status\, age or other protected status or activity in accordance with applicable law. SUMMARY:First Friday: Finding Balance - Wildfire Preparedness and Wildlife Habitat
DESCRIPTION:Being prepared for wildfire and supporting wildlife are two landscaping goals that may seem to be at odds. Marion SWCD’s Kassi Roosth (urban conservation) and Chelsea Blank (natural areas) will walk you through the main considerations and discuss how achieving both is possible. \nFirst Fridays are held on the first Friday of every month (except July) from 12-1 pm via Zoom. Join Marion SWCD staff and subject matter experts to learn something new about soil and water conservation and a wide array of related topics. \nIf you need special accommodations\, including translation services\, in order to participate\, please call the event coordinator at 503-949-4709 or email heath.keirstead@marionswcd.net as far in advance as possible.

SUMMARY:First Friday: Bridging Bytes and Blooms
DESCRIPTION:Bridging Bytes and Blooms: Embracing Nature through Tech in the City Nature Challenge \n \nMany people view nature and technology as separate entities and often view the two as in conflict. However\, technology can be used to help us better understand and connect with nature under the right circumstances. Join Max Light-Pacheco\, the Volunteer and Community Engagement Specialist for The Nature Conservancy in Oregon\, as he talks about the way the City Nature Challenge has expanded community engagement in the natural world via technology. \nStarted in 2016 as a competition between Los Angeles and San Francisco\, the City Nature Challenge (CNC) has grown into an international event\, motivating people around the world to find and document wildlife in their own cities. Run by the Community Science teams at the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM)\, the CNC is an annual four-day global bioblitz at the end of April\, where cities are in a collaboration-meets-friendly-competition to see what can be accomplished when we all work toward a common goal.More information will become available in March. The City of Salem is coordinating a series of City Nature Challenge opportunities April 26-29. \nThe Marion SWCD is an equal opportunity employer\, providing services to the public without regard to race\, religion\, color\, sexual orientation\, gender identity\, national origin\, mental or physical disability\, marital status\, age or other protected status or activity in accordance with applicable law.
