SUMMARY:First Friday: Bridging Bytes and Blooms
DESCRIPTION:Bridging Bytes and Blooms: Embracing Nature through Tech in the City Nature Challenge \n \nMany people view nature and technology as separate entities and often view the two as in conflict. However\, technology can be used to help us better understand and connect with nature under the right circumstances. Join Max Light-Pacheco\, the Volunteer and Community Engagement Specialist for The Nature Conservancy in Oregon\, as he talks about the way the City Nature Challenge has expanded community engagement in the natural world via technology. \nStarted in 2016 as a competition between Los Angeles and San Francisco\, the City Nature Challenge (CNC) has grown into an international event\, motivating people around the world to find and document wildlife in their own cities. Run by the Community Science teams at the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM)\, the CNC is an annual four-day global bioblitz at the end of April\, where cities are in a collaboration-meets-friendly-competition to see what can be accomplished when we all work toward a common goal.More information will become available in March. The City of Salem is coordinating a series of City Nature Challenge opportunities April 26-29. \nThe Marion SWCD is an equal opportunity employer\, providing services to the public without regard to race\, religion\, color\, sexual orientation\, gender identity\, national origin\, mental or physical disability\, marital status\, age or other protected status or activity in accordance with applicable law. SUMMARY:First Friday: Beavers in the Willamette Basin
DESCRIPTION:Beavers and their habitats provide numerous benefits for ecosystems and communities. They can also cause conflicts on working lands\, roadways\, and urban areas. Jean-Paul Zagarola will discuss how the Mid-Willamette Beaver Partnership is developing tools to restore beneficial beaver habitat and resources for people in the region to better co-exist with beavers while mitigating their negative impacts. \nJean-Paul A. Zagarola – Senior Program Manager for the Bonneville Environmental Foundation\, Jean-Paul has been supporting conservation and restoration efforts in Oregon since 2012. Jean-Paul cultivates diverse collaboratives to address complex socio-ecological problems and has a history of leveraging technical expertise\, partnerships and funding opportunities to support small non-profits and Tribes in their conservation work in the Willamette Valley and other regions of the state. Today\, Jean-Paul is focused on strategies that mitigate the impacts of climate change on ecosystems and communities through beaver-based restoration and wildfire resilience actions. When not at the office or exploring beavery creeks and wetlands\, Jean-Paul likes to enjoy the recreational and culinary bounty the Willamette Basin has to offer with his wife and two furry children.

SUMMARY:First Friday: Emerald Ash Borer in Oregon
DESCRIPTION:First Fridays are held on the first Friday of every month (except July) from 12-1 pm via Zoom. Join Marion SWCD staff and subject matter experts to learn something new about soil and water conservation and a wide array of related topics. \n \nAccording to Wyatt Williams with Oregon Department of Forestry\, “Since it was first found in the Detroit\, Michigan area back in 2002\, EAB has become the most destructive and costliest forest pest ever to invade North America.” Once Emerald Ash Borer is established\, it decimates ash populations\, leaving waterways exposed and vulnerable to degradation. The long anticipated first sighting of Emerald Ash Borer in Oregon occurred in Forest Grove recently.  Find out how to respond to the looming threat posed by this pest. \nPresenter Christine Buhl is a Forest Entomologist with Oregon Department of Forestry. \n  \n \nIf you need special accommodations\, including translation services\, in order to participate\, please call the office at 503-391-9927 or email office@marionswcd.net as far in advance as possible.
