Pacific Madrone

Size: 1-Gallon

Arbutus menziesii

Pacific madrone is a gorgeous broadleaf evergreen tree native to coastal forests and dry slopes of the Pacific Northwest and California. It is recognized by its smooth, skin-like orange bark that peels as it grows, revealing a striking contrast of green new bark below, and by the large, glossy, evergreen leaves. In spring, it bears clusters of small, bell-shaped, sweet-scented white flowers that attract pollinators, followed in fall by bright red-orange berries relished by birds and mammals. Ecologically, Pacific madrone contributes to forest diversity, thrives in dry, rocky soils, and provides critical forage and habitat in coastal and foothill ecosystems. Its unique beauty and resilience make it an iconic species of western forests. It can be tricky to establish, but with patience, it will be prized for its beauty and wildlife value for years to come.
