Black Twinberry

Lonicera involucrata

Black twinberry is a deciduous shrub native to moist forests, riparian areas, and wetlands of western North America. It typically grows 6–12 feet tall, with opposite, ovate leaves and clusters of fragrant, yellow tubular flowers in late spring to early summer. These flowers are followed by unique paired, glossy black berries with bright red bracts that persist into fall and provide food for birds and small mammals. Black twinberry thrives in moist, well-drained soils and partial to full shade, playing an important ecological role in stabilizing streambanks, providing wildlife habitat, and supporting hummingbirds and pollinators in forest and riparian ecosystems.
