Port Orford Cedar

Chamaecyparis lawsoniana

Plant Description

Port Orford cedar is a tall, evergreen conifer native to the coastal forests of southwestern Oregon and northwestern California. It typically grows 40–200 feet tall, with a straight trunk, fine-textured, dark green foliage, and reddish-brown, fibrous bark. The species produces small, round cones and is valued for its aromatic, decay-resistant wood, historically important for construction and woodworking. Ecologically, Port Orford cedar provides habitat and cover for wildlife, contributes to forest structure and diversity, and is adapted to moist, well-drained soils. It has more cultivated varieties than any other conifer and makes a great tree in yards and garden where it typically grows 40-80 feet tall.
