More than 70 traps have been placed around the county by Marion Soil & Water Conservation District, Oregon Parks & Recreation Department, the City of Salem, North Santiam Watershed Council, and Oregon Department of Forestry. Staff will return to the sticky traps in June or July to look for EAB, and again in September to look for EAB and remove the traps. Any suspicious insects will be preserved for positive identification. Traps will help us learn about the extent of the infestation and how to best help landowners within and outside of the infestation area.
You may see the large purple traps hanging from trees in parks and along roadsides. Please don’t mess with them! They are doing important work.
Marion SWCD is planning a landowner workshop later in the year to help prepare for EAB. We are also working with partners to develop recommendations for landowners and land managers to prepare for ash decline. By being proactive, we hope to prevent some of the worst impacts of EAB – like warming water and invasive species.
We are planning to mail postcards about EAB to landowners at high risk of infestation. Keep an eye on your mailbox to learn more.
Marion County has a quarantine on wood products from ash, olive, or white fringe trees to slow the spread of EAB. We will be putting Don’t Move Firewood signs around the district to remind folks of the dangers of moving untreated wood.
