Deer Fern

Blechnum spicant

Plant Description

Deer fern is a distinctive evergreen fern native to moist forests of the Pacific Northwest. It produces two types of fronds: flat, spreading sterile fronds that form a low rosette, and taller, erect fertile fronds with narrower leaflets that rise above. This dimorphic growth makes it easy to recognize in the field. Deer fern thrives in shady, damp habitats such as streambanks, forest understories, and mossy slopes, where it helps stabilize soil and provides cover for small wildlife. Its evergreen presence and adaptability to acidic soils make it a valuable component of native plant communities. Don’t let the name fool you: its also deer-resistant!
