Fava Bean

Vicia faba

Plant Description

Fava beans are an annual legume cultivated worldwide for its large, protein-rich seeds and nitrogen-fixing ability. The sturdy, upright plants bear compound leaves and distinctive white flowers with black or purple spots, which develop into thick pods containing several large beans. It is primarily grown as a cover crop because it improves soil fertility through symbiotic nitrogen fixation and can tolerate heavy clay. It’s a good option for late-season planting.
