Lady Fern

Athyrium filix-femina

Plant Description

Lady fern is a graceful, deciduous fern widely distributed across temperate regions of North America, Europe, and Asia. It thrives in moist forests, streambanks, and shaded wetlands, where its finely divided, bright green fronds can reach 2–5 feet in length, forming elegant clumps. The species reproduces by spores, which develop in sori along the undersides of the fronds. Ecologically, lady fern contributes to forest floor diversity, provides cover for small wildlife, and helps stabilize soils in damp habitats. Its adaptability and ornamental appearance also make it a popular choice for shade gardens and ecological restoration plantings. Deer-resistant.
