Adiantum aleuticum
Western maidenhair fern is a delicate yet resilient fern native to moist, shaded habitats across western North America. It is easily recognized by its graceful, fan-shaped fronds divided into small, bright green leaflets that fan out along dark, wiry black stems. Often found on rocky slopes, near waterfalls, or along streambanks, this fern thrives in cool, high-humidity environments. Its refined appearance and preference for stable, damp conditions make it both an indicator of healthy forest ecosystems and a favored species in native shade gardens. It goes dormant during hot dry spells.
