Soil Health Field Training for Farmers and Professionals

Join Dr. Shannon Cappellazzi for a hands-on soil health training designed specifically for farmers, agricultural producers, and technical assistance providers. This workshop will connect soil health principles with practical field assessment techniques to help participants better understand soil conditions and apply soil health knowledge in agricultural settings.

Through indoor instruction and an afternoon field session at a nearby farm, participants will practice evaluating soil conditions, selecting sampling sites, and using field tests to better understand soil function.

What you’ll learn

  • Assess soil health in the field: Practice visual soil health assessments and in-field soil tests.
  • Evaluate landscapes and select sampling sites: Explore how to assess site conditions and identify appropriate locations for soil sampling.
  • Understand soil biology: Learn about basic soil functions and the role of microbial communities in soil health.
  • Explore soil health practices: Discuss approaches to protect and improve soil health.
  • Review updated guidance: Learn about new NRCS guidelines for soil health sampling under CEMA 216.

Cost: Free for farmers, agricultural producers, and technical assistance providers
Continuing education: Up to six CEUs available through the American Society of Agronomy

Registration deadline: October 22, 2026. Registration is required. This training is intended for agricultural producers and professionals who provide technical assistance.
