That’s a Butterfly?

June 6 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

An introduction to the butterflies and moths in our urban environments, covering common species you may encounter throughout the seasons in their various forms. This presentation offers practical observation techniques, clarifies misconceptions, and reveals how butterflies appear in field conditions versus guidebooks. Learn about their complex relationships with other species (including humans), explore digital identification tools, and discover local resources where you can get involved. Gain the new skills to notice and appreciate these often-overlooked insects.

Michael Bunsen is a research software engineer who builds systems to facilitate biodiversity monitoring and conservation. Born and raised in the Willamette Valley, Michael works remotely with the Montreal Insectarium and Mila AI Research Institute in Canada where he contributes to the citizen science platform eButterfly and machine-assisted moth identification. When not on the computer, Michael keeps a net in hand and is eager to create more public awareness of butterflies and moths.
