Beargrass

Xerophyllum tenax

Plant Description

Beargrass is a showy and unique perennial herb native to western North America, particularly in subalpine and montane forests where it can form large swaths of tall, creamy, unique flowers. It grows from a dense, fibrous root system, producing long, narrow, grass-like leaves that can reach up to 3 feet in length. In late spring to early summer, it sends up showy flowering stalks topped with dense clusters of small, white, star-shaped flowers, which attract a variety of pollinators. Beargrass is highly adapted to fire-prone habitats, often flourishing after burns, and its leaves were historically used by native peoples for basket weaving and other crafts.
