Blanket Flower

Gaillardia aristata

Plant Description

Blanket flower is a hardy perennial wildflower native to prairies, grasslands, and open forests of western and central North America. It is easily recognized by its large, daisy-like blooms with red to orange centers surrounded by yellow-tipped rays which appear from early summer through fall. Growing 1–3 feet tall, it thrives in dry, well-drained soils and full sun, making it highly drought tolerant. Ecologically, blanket flower is an important nectar and pollen source for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, while its seeds provide food for birds. Its long blooming season and resilience also make it a valuable species for restoration plantings and native gardens.
