Common Sneezeweed

Helenium autumnale

Plant Description

Common sneezeweed is a perennial wildflower whose common name does not do it justice! Native to moist meadows, streambanks, and wetlands across much of North America, it grows to several feet tall with large, showy, flower heads that bloom from late summer into fall. Each flower has a raised, dome-shaped yellow disk surrounded by regal, saffron yellow rays that are often notched at the tips. Despite its name, the plant does not cause allergies. Ecologically, common sneezeweed is an important late-season nectar source for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, and its adaptability to wet soils makes it valuable in riparian and restoration plantings.
