Goatsbeard

Aruncus dioicus

Plant Description

Sylvan goatsbeard is a tall, perennial herb native to forests, streambanks, and shaded slopes across North America, Europe, and Asia. It forms large clumps of finely divided, pinnate leaves and produces elegant feathery plumes of small white flowers on separate male and female plants in late spring to early summer. Reaching heights of 4–6 feet, it adds dramatic structure to riparian and woodland plant communities. Ecologically, Sylvan goatsbeard supports pollinators such as bees, flies, and beetles, while its dense growth provides cover for wildlife. Its tolerance of shade and moisture also makes it valuable in restoration plantings and naturalistic gardens.
