Grand Fir

Abies grandis

Plant Description

Grand fir is a tall, aromatic conifer native to the Pacific Northwest and northern California, commonly found in moist, mixed-conifer and montane forests. It can reach heights of over 200 feet, with a straight trunk, flattened needles arranged in two horizontal rows, and smooth gray bark that becomes furrowed with age. The needles emit a strong citrus-like scent when crushed, and its cones stand upright on upper branches. Grand fir is shade-tolerant and often used in reforestation, timber production, and as a popular Christmas tree species, thriving best in cool, well-drained soils.
