Oregon Myrtle

Plant Description

Oregon myrtle is an aromatic evergreen tree or large shrub native to coastal and foothill forests of the Pacific Coast, from California up through southwestern Oregon and into the Willamette Valley. Its leathery, lance-shaped leaves release a pungent, camphor-like scent when crushed. In late winter to early spring, it bears clusters of small yellow-green flowers followed by olive-like fruits. Oregon myrtle is a dominant component of mixed evergreen and riparian forests, providing habitat and food for wildlife, including birds and mammals that eat its fruits. It is also fire-adapted and capable of vigorous resprouting after disturbance. The wood is prized by woodworkers for its beautiful grain and some people use the leaves as you might use bay, though the flavor is much stronger and may cause headaches in some people.
