Red-Flowering Currant

Ribes sanguineum

Plant Description

Red-flowering currant is a deciduous shrub native to dry forests, slopes, and open woodlands of the Pacific Northwest. Growing 6–12 feet tall, it is prized by gardeners and recreationists alike for its striking clusters of bright pink to deep red flowers that bloom in early spring, often before its leaves fully emerge. These blossoms provide an important early nectar source for hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies. By summer, it produces small, bluish-black berries covered with a waxy bloom, eaten by birds and other wildlife. Ecologically, red-flowering currant contributes to pollinator and bird habitat while adding vibrant seasonal color to native plant communities and restoration landscapes. It’s also an excellent addition to more traditional yards and hedgerows.
