Wavyleaf Silk Tassel

Garrya elliptica

Plant Description

Wavyleaf silk tassel is an evergreen shrub native to the coastal ranges of California and southern Oregon, thriving in chaparral, coastal scrub, and mixed evergreen forests. It is best known for its striking pendulous catkins that appear in late winter to early spring, with male plants producing long, silvery-gray tassels that can reach over a foot in length. The leathery, dark green leaves with wavy margins give the plant a dense, handsome appearance year-round. Ecologically, Coast silktassel provides shelter and forage for wildlife while its drought tolerance and ornamental catkins make it a popular choice for native landscaping and restoration plantings in dry, mild climates.
