Sea Thrift

Armeria maritima

Plant Description

Sea thrift is a low, tufted perennial native to coastal bluffs, dunes, and rocky outcrops. It forms dense clumps of grass-like evergreen leaves and sends up slender stalks topped with cheerful round clusters of pink to lavender flowers in late spring and summer. Adapted to salty, wind-swept, and nutrient-poor soils, it is highly tolerant of harsh coastal conditions where it helps stabilize fragile habitats. In the Willamette Valley, its compact form and bright blooms make it a favored species for rock gardens and borders, and as a slow-growing groundcover.
