Redstem Ceanothus

Ceanothus sanguineus

Plant Description

Redstem ceanothus is a montane shrub found across the interior Northwest, thriving in dry to mesic forests, open slopes, and post-fire landscapes. It grows quickly after disturbance, forming thickets that stabilize soil and provide high-quality browse for deer and elk. The species fixes nitrogen, enriching nutrient-poor substrates and facilitating recovery of conifer forests after stand-replacing fire. Its reddish bark, showy white flower clusters, and wildlife value make it ecologically important, though its competitive growth can temporarily dominate early-successional sites until tree canopies close.
