Blue Blossom

Ceanothus thyrsiflorus

Plant Description

Blue blossom is a fast-growing evergreen shrub native to the southern Oregon coast and down through California. It is recognized by its glossy, dark green leaves and a profusion of dense clusters of bright blue to pale lavender flowers that bloom in spring. These flowers provide an important early-season nectar source for native pollinators, while the shrub also offers cover for wildlife. Blue blossom thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, is highly drought-tolerant once established, and plays a key role in soil enrichment by fixing nitrogen.
