Dodecatheon pulchellum
Darkthroat shooting star is a native perennial wildflower found in moist meadows, prairies, streambanks, and seasonally wet areas across western North America. It forms a basal rosette of smooth, oval to lance-shaped leaves and produces slender flower stalks topped with distinctive pink to magenta flowers with sharply reflexed petals and a pointed cluster of dark stamens. Blooming in spring to early summer, its unusual flowers are primarily pollinated by native bees using buzz pollination. Darkthroat shooting star becomes dormant as soils dry later in the season, making it well adapted to seasonally wet meadows and prairies.
