Foothill Sedge

Carex tumulicola

Plant Description

Foothill sedge is a clump-forming, evergreen perennial sedge native to grasslands, open woodlands, and foothill slopes of western North America, particularly in California and Oregon. Unlike many sedges, it thrives in both dry and moderately moist soils making it adaptable to a wide range of habitats. It produces fine-textured, arching green leaves and inconspicuous flower spikes in spring to early summer. Ecologically, foothill sedge provides erosion control and serves as habitat for insects and small wildlife. Its resilience and ornamental form also make it a popular choice for sustainable landscaping and native restoration projects.
