Glacier-Lily

Erythronium grandiflorum

Plant Description

Glacier-lily is a perennial, bulbous wildflower native to subalpine and alpine meadows, open forests, and moist slopes of western North America. It produces slender, mottled basal leaves and tall stems bearing bright yellow, nodding, lily-like flowers in early spring, often among melting snow. The early bloom provides an important nectar source for bees and other pollinators emerging from hibernation. Glacier-lily is adapted to well-drained soils and full to partial sun, and its bulbs were traditionally harvested by native peoples as a food source, making it both ecologically and culturally significant.
