Fragaria virginiana
Mountain strawberry is a perennial herb native to North America, often found in meadows, open woods, and along forest edges. It produces trifoliate, toothed leaves and small, fragrant white flowers in spring, followed by bright red, edible strawberries in early summer. The plant spreads via runners, forming low, dense mats that help stabilize soil and suppress competing vegetation. Fragaria virginiana provides nectar for pollinators, fruit for birds and mammals, and has been historically used by native peoples for food, making it both ecologically and culturally significant in native landscapes.
