Coast Strawberry

Fragaria chiloensis

Plant Description

Coast strawberry is a low-growing, perennial groundcover native to coastal dunes, bluffs, and sandy soils in our region. It spreads vigorously by stolons, forming dense mats of glossy, three-parted leaves that help stabilize loose soils. In spring, it produces white, five-petaled flowers that develop into small, sweet, edible strawberries, which provide food for birds, mammals, and people. Ecologically, coast strawberry is an important coastal species, preventing erosion, supporting pollinators, and serving as one of the wild progenitors of the cultivated garden strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa). It is a great option for a green roof or hardy, short-stature groundcover.
