Sambucus racemosa
Red elderberry is a deciduous shrub native to moist forests, streambanks, and riparian areas across much of North America and parts of Eurasia. It produces clusters of small, creamy-white flowers in late spring, followed by bright red berries in summer that provide an important food source for birds and other wildlife. The plant has compound, serrated leaves and can reach heights of 10-20 feet. Red elderberry thrives in rich, well-drained soils with partial sun to full shade and plays a significant ecological role in supporting pollinators and wildlife in forested and riparian ecosystems.
