Hooker’s Willow

Salix hookeriana

Plant Description

Hooker’s willow is a large native shrub or small tree of coastal wetlands, streambanks, and estuaries in the Pacific Northwest. It grows rapidly, forming dense thickets with broad, velvety leaves and flexible stems that tolerate flooding and salt spray. This species is highly effective at stabilizing soils, slowing erosion, and trapping sediment in dynamic coastal and riparian systems. Its early catkins provide an important pollen source for native insects, while the dense growth offers cover for birds and other wildlife.
