Pacific Bayberry

Morella californica

Plant Description

Pacific bayberry is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to coastal forests and riparian areas of the Pacific Northwest and California. It typically grows 6–30 feet tall with narrow, aromatic leaves that release a spicy scent when crushed. Small, inconspicuous flowers bloom in spring, followed by clusters of tiny bluish-purple berries coated in a waxy layer, which provide food for birds and other wildlife. Ecologically, Pacific bayberry is an important stabilizer of sandy soils, supports pollinators, and creates dense cover for habitat. Its tolerance of various light and moisture conditions, and poor soils makes it a valuable species for restoration and native landscaping. It makes a great hedgerow or evergreen screen.
