False Lily-of-the-Valley

Maianthemum dilatatum

Plant Description

False lily-of-the-valley is a low-growing perennial native to the moist forests and coastal regions of western North America and parts of Asia. It forms dense mats of heart-shaped, glossy green leaves and produces small, starry white flowers in late spring, followed by red berries in summer. Preferring shaded, damp environments, it thrives in rich, organic soils along forest floors and streambanks. False lily-of-the-valley plays an important ecological role by providing early-season nectar for pollinators and fruit for birds, while its lush foliage contributes to groundcover and soil stabilization in woodland habitats. It spreads by rhizome to form a luscious green carpet.
